New Garden for a new Home: Amending Your Soil – Part Four
The best way to amend poor soil, whether sandy, clay or silty, is to add organic matter. If your soil is high in sand or silt, a combination of topsoil and peat moss or compost can be added. If the soil has too much clay, add gypsum or compost with some sand.
I have found that adding the above to your soil and mixing it through with a powerful rotary hoe will improve your soil structure and help with drainage. If your soil is extremely heavy, with clay, you may want to work with raised beds. This will provide more drainage than they might have otherwise and won’t entail replacing several tons of soil. Landscape timbers such as sleepers or stone can be used to create a retaining wall, then you can add organic garden blend soil/compost which every garden enjoys.
